What are box braids?
Box Braids are Individual braids that hang off the scalp vertically like the client above. The actual shape and size of the braid is determined by the stylist. Some stylist create there boxes (at the scalp) in a moon shape, others create perfect shaped boxes and some even create triangles, diamonds and more recently we have seen hearts.
What shape box braids does AZ Summer Stylez use?
We more frequently use box shapes in a brick lay pattern for coverage. We never use moon shapes. Many African style braiders and Caribbean style braiders use moons. We can create triangle parting but only by request. Our go-to shape are the traditional boxes. We offering the original box braids.
Are box braids painful?
Yes box braids can be painful and are painful to many if the stylist has a heavy hand or a painful technique. Our stylist at AZ Summer Stylez are very light handed and 100% against painful braids or methods. As a matter of a fact our business was built on our ability to create neat and secure braids without pain or discomfort. If you need medication -- something may have went wrong. You may want to find a new stylist.
What should I do if my braids are too tight?
If you go home with too tight braids and are concerned you may want to remove them. However, if you don't have time to remove your box braids or you simply don't want to waste your money there are other options. First thing to remember is that water wont help. Don't get in the shower and run water through your scalp. This method may give you some immediate relief but your natural hair will swell with water and your braids will feel tighter after. Oil can help. Many oils such as castor oil with large molecules have a hard time entering the cuticle and may give relief. At very least, we would suggest getting the edges re-braided. You definitely don't want your natural edges to break because they take long to grow back. AZ Summer Stylez offer touch-up braids at $3 a braid.

Does box braids help the natural hair grow?
Yes. Box braids has been known to grow the natural hair and protect the natural hair from damaging properties. Here we can compare hair to a towel. When a large towel is wet it tends to hold water for a longer period of time than a smaller towel. Very similar to hair- when the natural hair is loose and separated it holds less moisture. If you gather the strands together in a box braid the natural hair has the ability to hold moisture for a longer period of time and grow faster. This is why box braids are affective in growing the natural hair along with other reasons.
Does AZ Summer Stylez use human (real) hair or synthetic (fake hair) for their braid styles?
AZ Summer Stylez uses synthetic hair for braids styles. We do not use real human hair for braiding. We only use human real hair bundles for weaving and extensions. Many braid shops use human hair but AZ Summer Stylez has found that human hair has a lot more slip and less control. This con forces stylist to pull tighter to create stable braids and we are against pulling and breakage. Human hair can be used but we don't want to jeopardize the integrity of our clients natural hair.
Does AZ Summer Stylez offer micro braids?
No. Micro braids are most commonly used with human hair and they are very small. We don't offer human hair extensions and we don't promote very small sections due to possible breakage. The smallest we encourage hair to stay separated in a braid is size small. The smaller the braid the less moisture the natual hair will hold.
When is the best time to where box braids?
This depends on the clients lifestyle. Many clients choose to wear their hair and their young girls hair in box braids during the hot and summer months due to lack of energy and busy schedules. Box braids are very low maintenance yet stylish. They are highly recommended for swimming and athletes. Other clients also enjoy wearing box braids in the winter because to avoid wetting their hair in the cold months. This can lower the risk of getting sick. It also tends to be less maintenance than straightening the hair. Straight hair doesn't like water and moisture and may not last long at all. Our highest clientele is the traveling women. No one wants to deal with hair and weather issues while traveling.
